Following last year’s successful launch, LightFair is bringing back its Designery – a series of 13 hour-long educational sessions presented inside the Design Pavilion – to the LightFair Trade Show, June 21 – 23 at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
“Design education on the show floor provides further value to the exhibit hall pass, especially for attendees with limited time to explore everything LightFair has to offer,” said Dan Darby, show director. “Designery programming will help LightFair designers and specifiers identify design-driven lighting and lighting-adjacent tools that they can directly explore in the exhibit hall.”
The Designery, which is a design-dedicated seminar space located within the Design Pavilion, is set to present 13 hour-long educational sessions led by industry-leading lighting designers, architects, specifiers and interior designers.
The educational sessions will take place as moderated discussions, conversations, case studies, presentations and leadership panels in the Designery. Nine presentations each offer 1.0 CEU credit: ART LIGHT: Transcendent Illumination presented by Charles Stone; Plants vs People presented by Christopher Bishop; Spotlight on the Queer Experience in Lighting presented by Alana Shepard; Light on Waste: Evaluating the Impact of LED Lighting presented by Christine Cornelius, Sara Duffy, and Zach Suchara; The Art of Landscape Illumination presented by Dawn Hollingsworth and Kathryn Toth; Health, Hospitality and our Environment presented by Brennan Schumacher and Janelle Drouet; From the Spark of an Idea to the Flip of the Switch presented by Clara Bukalski, Lisa Reed,Liz Arras, Dick Pendleton, Kaitlin Page, Brad Picht, and Bob King; Creative Techniques for Conveying Lighting Concepts presented by Emlyn Altman; LIGHT FIXTURE CONSIDERATIONS Materials, Light Quality, Future Proofing and Flexibility presented by Anna-Lisa Conners ; and Using UV Light as a Disinfectant presented by Laura Cowley and Pieter De Bod (Note: A full Designery schedule follows).

The LightFair Conference, which runs June 19 – 23, will showcase some 44 sessions across six tracks, spanning over the five days of the conference. Sessions will range from 2-days, 1-day, daily workshops, 90-minute sessions and 60-minute sessions, offering 120+ CEUs. Beginning with a brief history of horticultural lighting leading up to today, this session will overview the different metrics & terminology used in plant light science compared to traditional lighting design, examine the state of the industry taking an in-depth look at cannabis production facilities, microgreen & vegetable greenhouses and indoor insect farms for protein to highlight the diverse applications using plant-light science and take a closer look at the importance & value in horticultural design. The Construction and Design industry is at a turning point in the transition to sustainable building materials and processes. Circularity, carbon neutrality, and human-centered metrics are moving to the forefront of design process and practice.
The lighting industry still has work to do. Typical LED components are comprised of finite resources, and data on embodied energy, carbon impact, and waste stream is extremely limited. As LED becomes the predominant light source globally, it’s time to re-evaluate the full impact of a luminaire. From material excavation to end-of-life treatment, from design layout to controls commissioning – it all makes a difference.

In order to win project contracts and effectively convey illumination concepts to the clients and design team, lighting designers need to have a diverse palette of representation tools to convey their lighting design intent. This session explores the world of 2D lighting imagery that can be used to enhance conceptual studies and final presentations. Attendees will learn advanced 2D techniques to “paint” with light using layers and effect filters within Photoshop and Illustrator.

We are currently experiencing 6 generations that are currently in the workplace, spanning 66 years. This panel is a guided discussion as to the typical traits and characteristics of each generation, a brief overview of the individual and shared histories of the generations, what events have shaped their lives, how they communicate, and how they are viewed by the other generations. Including pros and cons to each generation’s approach to working and collaboration.

Last year, LightFair began its first ever Mentorship Program. LightFair continued the program for the second year, matching mentors and emerging lighting professionals looking to grow. Using UV Light as a Disinfectant

This session will discuss using UV-C for disinfection of room air and surfaces, and its ability to effectively inactivate airborne viruses like SARS-COV2 responsible for Covid-19. Different options are explored including lamps, applications, and safety concerns. Applications discussed include: upper room germicidal UV, In-AHU UVGI (Coil, Filter, and Drain Irradiation), In-Duct UVGI (Airstream Disinfection), Mobile Air Cleaning UVGI Unit, and Mobile Whole Room (Bare Lamp) UVGI Unit.
